A story that really moved me I was born in 1970, the same year that the Israeli company Meshulam Avni & son Ltd. took office as our official representative in Israel. Meshulam was the founder of the enterprise, and it bears his name to this day. Until he was ninety years old, Meshulam continued to work. Everyone at LAUDA remembers him fondly after his death on April 21, 2010, at the age of 95. I was taken aback by the unexpected surprise that his son and the actual owner itzik avni brought during his visit to our offices. An exquisite framed artwork by the Romanian-born artist Eliahu Adler, who was Meshulam's cousin, was presented to me by him. Adler was born in 1912. The whole Jewish population of the Romanian town of Sighet was deported to Auschwitz as soon as the German forces arrived in the town in Transylvania. Eliahu Adler pleaded with Josef Mengele in fine German to sign a document before Mengele intended to have him executed. Both Josef Mengele and Eliahu Adler were influenced by it. Witnessing an exact replica of his signature astounded Josef Mengele. The Nazis took advantage of him to replicate several signatures that were necessary until the closure of the camp. He lived because of that. He achieved international renown as a painter. Due to Josef Mengele's tests on her, his wife was unable to conceive. Their journey to Israel began in 1949. Each time the Avni family came to visit, he would present them with one of his unique works of art. I was presented with one of these today. When people forgive and appreciate one another, even former enemies can become close friends, as this story shows. When it comes to life and work. It brings up the weighty history that we Germans have to bear as well. It also gives me hope that people may put aside their differences and live in harmony once more.
